Patti MacNicol, Chair
Patti MacNicol received her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and is a Chartered Professional Accountant. Following 15 years in the practice of public accounting Patti spent 4 years as the Director of Finance for Branksome Hall. For the past 17 years she has been with Upper Canada College where she is currently the Chief Administrative Officer with overall responsibility for finance, risk management, facilities and information technology. She is the Vice President and Treasurer of the Canadian Foundation for Aids Research (CANFAR) and a member of the CAIS Thought Leadership Committee, which provides counsel and oversight to the Collaborative Boarding Project. Patti is a former Board member of Branksome Hall and a former member of the Finance Committee of Trinity College at the University of Toronto.
Sharon (Sherry) Stewart
In 1995, Sherry, with the assistance of two parents founded and became Headmistress of RDS. The school has grown and prospered over the last seventeen years and Sherry is delighted to continue to help guide the progress of RDS as a member of the Board. Before founding RDS, Sherry taught at the Bishop Strachan School and Havergal College. She has been engaged in the education of young children for over twenty-five years. She has also served on the boards of Family Day Care Services and The Garden Club of Toronto.
Paul Smith, a graduate of Queen’s University, joined the RDS Board in 2012. Paul has successfully fulfilled senior leadership roles in the past and recently was the President of Hargraft Schofield, a Toronto-based broker. Paul brings with him extensive background experience in the areas of construction, environmental and the education fields.
Martha Binks has been a parent with RDS since 1997. All three of her sons started in JK and Sam, her youngest is now in Grade 8. She is the General Counsel and Director of Legal Services with the Allstate Canada Group and has been in practice for 27 years. She originally hails from Ottawa, and received her B.A. from Queen’s University (Arts ’82) and her LL.B. From Osgoode Hall Law School (1985). She has been active in the parents community, participating in RDS’s Art Shows as a co-chair for 5 years and she was a founding member of the Parent Guild Executive.
Carole McAfee has been with RDS since its inception in 1995, first as a parent and since 2009 as a member of the Board of Directors. Carole’s daughter Mary was in the first class at RDS and her son Mitchell attended the school from JK through to Grade 8. Carole is a graduate of Victoria College at UofT and went on to do her law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School. She practices transportation and employment law with Wilson Vukelich LLP.
During her 17 years as an educator, Alana has worked with students at all levels from elementary to university. Since 2003, she has held various roles at The Linden School including Senior English teacher, Head of Pedagogy, and Co-Principal. Alana is a graduate of Trent University and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where she completed her Ph.D. in English with a focus in life writing and writing pedagogy. She currently works as a writing coach, tutor, and freelance editor.
Barbara Kochman has been a parent with RDS since 2012, when her son started in JK. She is a graduate of York University, and went on to complete her graduate studies at Laurentian University. Barbara brings with her more than 15 years of sales, marketing and operations experience in professional services organizations in the Financial Services, Information Technology and Human Resources industries.
Minard Tapawan is an Infrastructure Administrator whose career spans over 15 years in both profit and non-profit sectors. Holding industry standard designations from Microsoft, VMware, EMC and Cisco, his core responsibilities include network security and IT infrastructure availability. He is also a Tennis Canada Certified Professional and the Head Teaching Professional at two GTA tennis clubs. During his time away from work, Minard enjoys spending time with his family and volunteering for a number of worthy causes including organizing tennis-related events for charitable organizations. As an RDS parent to Chyra (Grade 7) and Skylar (Grade 3) since 2009, he has been an avid Art Show Volunteer and has been a Class Parent on two occasions.
